What complaints can be reviewed
The process covers allegations involving:
- Violations of the IASI Code of Ethics
- Violations of the Scope of Practice
- Misrepresentation of certification status
- Conduct inconsistent with professional standards
- Failure to meet certification or recertification requirements
Complaints may be submitted by clients, IASI members, non-members, and members of the public.
How to file a complaint
To start the formal process, your complaint must:
- Be in writing
- Be signed by you
- Clearly describe the alleged violation
- Include current, accurate contact information
- Be mailed (not emailed) to IASI National Headquarters:
International Association of Structural Integrators
[574E or 527E?] Ritchie Highway, #271
Severna Park, MD 21146
Unsigned complaints, phone calls, emails, social media posts, and anonymous submissions can't start the formal process. Without a signed, written complaint, the process can't proceed.
Initial review
After a signed, written complaint is received:
- The Executive Director or a designee reviews it.
- The complainant is contacted within five business days.
- The complaint process is confirmed in writing.
- The matter is referred to the Standards & Ethics Committee for investigation, and to the Certification Board for Structural Integration (CBSI) for discretionary review.
A formal case file is created and maintained.
Investigation
The Standards & Ethics Committee investigates complaints and makes findings and recommendations to the Board of Directors. During an investigation, the Committee:
- Determines how the investigation will be conducted
- Reviews documentation and supporting information
- Uses reasonable discretion to decide whether a dispositional hearing is warranted, or whether written submissions from the parties are the best way forward
- Pursues mediation or a negotiated resolution when appropriate
The Committee supports both complainant and respondent and invites full cooperation from all parties. IASI members are required to cooperate fully with investigations.
Certification review by CBSI
When a complaint involves a BCSI and CBSI is informed of the factual allegations, CBSI may act on that knowledge. If CBSI determines, at its sole discretion, that the alleged conduct may affect certification status, it will:
- Make findings on professional competence and certification standards based on the allegations
- Recommend whether BCSI status should be revoked if the allegations are found true
- Propose alternatives to full revocation, if it considers them a possible resolution
CBSI's findings and recommendations are forwarded to the IASI Board of Directors along with those of the Standards & Ethics Committee. Final authority for certification disposition rests with the Board, and may be appealed in the same way as general ethics decisions.
Board review and disposition
After the investigation:
- The Standards & Ethics Committee reports its findings and recommendations to the IASI Board of Directors.
- Any CBSI findings and recommendations are also submitted to the Board.
- The Board reviews the case.
- The Board issues a final disposition.
Possible outcomes include:
- No action
- Advisory or corrective action
- Required remediation
- Probation
- Private censure
- Public censure
- Suspension of certification
- Revocation of certification
- Remedial alternatives to suspension or revocation
Changes to certification status are implemented after the Board's final disposition. The Board has absolute discretion over whether a status change takes effect before, during, or after a timely appeal.
Appeals
Appeals must be submitted in writing to the President of the IASI Board of Directors. The Board's decision on appeal is final.
Confidentiality
Investigations are conducted with respect for confidentiality and fairness. Case materials are kept in official archives after a matter concludes. Information about investigations isn't publicly disclosed; public reporting is limited to certification status changes or formal public censure when applicable.
Effect on certification status
Certification status reflects a practitioner's current standing after review and Board disposition. Possible outcomes for status include:
- Active (no findings affecting certification)
- Privately censured
- Publicly censured
- Suspended
- Revoked, with the possibility of reapplying
- Permanently revoked
- Lapsed (non-disciplinary)
Status can be checked through the public certification registry.
Our commitment
IASI is committed to fair and impartial review, protection of public welfare, due process, consistent application of standards, the integrity of the certification program, and separation of investigation from final disposition.
