Certification

Recertification Details

Board Certification is an active credential that must be maintained through recertification. Recertification supports continued competence, ethical accountability, and engagement with the evolving field of Structural Integration.

Recertification checklist

To keep active BCSI status:

  • Complete 24 CE hours each cycle, including at least 12 Structural Integration-specific hours
  • Submit your application and the $100 non-refundable fee during the recertification window
  • Keep your CE documentation for three years
  • Remain in compliance with IASI certification policies, including the professional and ethical codes of conduct

Why recertification matters

BCSI is not a permanent designation; it's an ongoing professional commitment. Recertification:

  • Encourages ongoing professional development
  • Supports ethical and professional accountability
  • Maintains the integrity of the BCSI credential
  • Keeps certificants aligned with current certification standards

Cycle and timeline

Practitioners recertify two years after passing the CESI, and every two years after that. Recertification windows are announced before each renewal period, and applications must be submitted within the window to keep active status.

If certification lapses, the practitioner may no longer use the BCSI designation, and reinstatement may require retaking the CESI.

Requirements

Each recertification application must include:

  • 24 total CE hours, with at least 12 Structural Integration-specific hours
  • CE hours earned after your most recent certification or recertification
  • An online recertification application
  • The $100 non-refundable application fee

The fee supports maintenance and psychometric review of the CESI, ongoing quality assurance, and administration of the certification program.

Keep your documentation for three years. You'll submit it only if your application is selected for audit.

Continuing education categories

Structural Integration-specific CE (minimum 12 hours)

Education and activities directly related to the practice of Structural Integration, such as:

  • IASI-approved continuing education courses and events
  • Classes sponsored by IASI or IASI Recognized Programs
  • Classes related to fascia or traditional Structural Integration methods
  • Mentoring (the mentor must hold active BCSI and have at least five years of experience)
  • Teaching or assisting in an IASI Recognized Program
  • Presenting at Structural Integration conferences or symposiums
  • Structural Integration study groups
  • Structural Integration publications (books and peer-reviewed articles)
  • IASI or CBSI volunteer service (up to 12 CE hours per cycle)

One class hour equals one SI-specific CE hour, up to 8 per day unless otherwise specified. Volunteer service earns one-half SI-specific CE hour for each hour volunteered.

Elective CE

Education that supports or enhances competence in Structural Integration practice, such as:

  • Manual therapy modalities that support Structural Integration
  • Movement education training
  • Ethics courses (up to 4 hours per cycle)

Examples of recognized providers include Dermoneuromodulation (DNM), the International Alliance of Healthcare Educators, the International Spine and Pain Institute, Medbridge Education, Neurodynamic Solutions, Alexander Technique, Body-Mind Centering, Feldenkrais, Hanna Somatics, and Yoga Alliance.

Classes focused specifically on massage techniques (for example Swedish massage, Reiki, or energy work) don't qualify.

Examples

Qualifying combinations can look like:

  • SI-specific coursework, elective education, and volunteer service together
  • Meeting the 24-hour total, then adding SI-specific hours to reach the 12-hour minimum
  • Exceeding the minimums through coursework, teaching, publications, or other qualifying activities

Audits

  • 10% of recertification applications are randomly selected for audit.
  • Selected applicants must provide their documentation on request.
  • Insufficient documentation may result in suspension of certification.
  • The application fee is non-refundable, including for audited applications.

Lapse and reinstatement

If you don't meet the requirements within the renewal period, your certification becomes inactive and you may not use the BCSI designation.

Under current policy, the CESI may not be used for recertification more than once without specific approval. Reinstatement may require re-examination.

Extenuating circumstances

CBSI recognizes that extraordinary circumstances can affect a practitioner's ability to recertify. Requests for individual consideration must be emailed at least 30 days before the deadline and include:

  • A written explanation of the circumstances
  • A complete record of CE hours earned
  • A plan for completing the remaining requirements
  • Information about any alternative courses or activities and their relevance to Structural Integration practice

A $25 review fee applies. Requests are reviewed by members of the CBSI Board, and determinations may be appealed to the full Board, whose decision is final.

If an extension is granted, CE hours apply only to the approved retroactive period. Extra hours may carry over to the next cycle.
